The Working Sky · A Fracture Cosmology Story

The Empty Leg

by

The rule was right. The arithmetic was right.

The rule is simple. Crossings cost something the universe does not give back. A full hold or no hold. Make the trip count. Then a message reaches the Curlew: Corven, the man who taught Marsten that rule, is dying four crossings away.

Marsten unloads a working ship, gives away paid freight and departs with sixty tonnes of nothing behind him. On the long empty legs, another journey from nine years earlier comes back with him, and the arithmetic is still right.

The Empty Leg is a complete standalone science-fiction short read about principles, cost and the difference between being right and living with it. Set in the Fracture Cosmology. No previous reading required.
